Rossendale streets where residents ask for gas to be 'cut off' because they can't afford to pay
, has received an influx of calls from people who cannot afford their energy bills. National newspapers have reported bailiffs forcing their way into homes to fit more expensive pre-payment meters and, although CARH specialist project manager and development manager Jenny Duthie had not been made aware of such incidents locally, she described the cost-of-living crisis as desperate.
He was keeping warm by getting residual heat from a downstairs flat where the resident had a health condition and so had to keep her accommodation heated at all times. She said: “Many people are being forced to have pre-payment meters installed even though they have long-term health conditions or disabilities, some have young children and babies and living in a cold home can make their existing health conditions worse.
A young mum contacted CARH as she had a two-week-old baby and had no money to top up the gas meter because of a problem with her Universal Credit; she was given fuel vouchers and help to resolve her benefits. A man with health conditions, including Reynaud’s disease which is triggered by cold temperatures, contacted the advice service because he was putting up to £10 a day on gas and electric just to keep warm; he was given fuel vouchers to help during the coldest periods.
