A dolphin stranded last weekend at a Brazoria County beach was harassed by beachgoers and died shortly before it could be rescued, according to the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network.when a group of people found the dolphin and attempted to push it back into the water and ride it, the agency stated. The dolphin was stranded again a second time on the beach and died before rescuers could arrive.Abbott's first busload of immigrants arrives in D.C.
The agency alerted the park manager about the stranded dolphin and asked them to stay with the animal while agency officials were en route, but it died before the manager could arrive, according to Quintana Beach County Park officials. Although intentions may be good when attempting to push out a stranded marine mammal, experts say actions — like the ones from Sunday's incident — are inexcusable, can result in stress on the sick animal and a harassment investigation on the beachgoer.
"Dolphins strand because they are sick or injured and will most likely drown if returned to sea or re-strand in worse condition," Heidi Whitehead, executive director of Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network, stated in an email."Marine mammals are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and those behaviors are considered harassment, which is punishable by law.
Experts cautioned beachgoers if they come across a live stranded dolphin or whale, they should contact the network at 1-800-962-6625 for help on how to care for the animal until the network's rescue response team arrives.
