The carvings were found on the back of Bishop Cardeny's resting place at Dunkeld Cathedral in Perthshire during a routine inspection.
Mystery carvings hidden hidden on the back of a tomb at a Scots cathedral were uncovered after around 600 years. Conservationists stumbled upon at least a dozen never-seen-before saint-like stone figures during a routine inspection of Dunkeld Cathedral in 2018.
The carvings were discovered by Colin Muir, a stone conservation expert from Historic Environment Scotland. Speaking after the find in 2018, he said: "The discovery of these rare, hidden carvings behind the 15th century tomb of Bishop Cardeny is very exciting and will enrich our understanding of the history of Dunkeld Cathedral and late medieval stone carving.
Top news stories today After the surprising discovery, experts carried out a more detailed assessment of the tomb using top-of-the-range 3D photogrammetric technology. This allowed a 3D model to be created using a variety of images and allowed a closer look at the carvings.
