The beach, which also doubled as a resort, was initially owned by Charles and Willa Bruce who designated the beauty spot for black residents to turn to after purchasing the property in 1912 when racism in the US remained potent. Marcus and Derrick Bruce, great-grandsons of Charles and Willa Bruce, officially acquired the land in June last year – but have decided to sell it back to LA county for millions of dollars. “The seizure of Bruce’s Beach nearly a century ago was an injustice inflicted upon not just Willa and Charles Bruce but generations of their descendants who almost certainly would have been millionaires,” she said in a statement.
Speaking on KBLA radio talk show Tavis Smiley, the family’s attorney – George Fatheree – explained the reason behind the drastic move: “The return of the property and the ability to sell the property and take the funds and invest it in a way that’s important to their lives represents an important opportunity for my clients to get a glimpse of that legacy that was theirs.”
