Residents in Montana have just over a week to apply for a property tax rebate of up to $675 per taxpayer.
The tax rebate can be applied for the next eight days either through the online portal set up by the state or via a paper form, with all submissions due by Oct. 1.To be eligible for the tax rebate, taxpayers in the Treasure State must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months. Another stipulation for the rebate includes having been billed and having paid for property taxes on the residence in the 2022 tax year.
"Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session," Gov. Greg Gianforte said in a statement about the tax rebate in July."Now, it's time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term."
The amount Montana residents receive from the rebate is equal to the amount paid in property taxes for the taxpayer's"principal Montana residence," with a limit of $675 for the rebate payment.The state said the rebates are being sent within 30 days of filing the application through the online portal or up to 90 days after submitting a paper application. Each property can be used for only one tax rebate.
For 2024, an identical tax rebate based on tax year 2023 was passed by state lawmakers alongside the 2023 program, which will send out rebates to eligible residents on an identical basis next year.
