The allocation comes from President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus law.
“Providing states and territories with the support to prevent suicide by assisting people in crisis is critical to our nation’s health,” Health and Human Services HS Secretary Xavier Becerra said.by HHS’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. In all, $105 million will go to 54 states and territories.
“988 will be more than just an easy-to-remember number. It will be a direct connection to accessible and compassionate care and support, and will be open to anyone experiencing emotional distress or those worried about a loved one.”, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state Department of Human Services’ Lifeline program received 55,068 calls in 2020 and is expected to get between 119,000 and 187,900 calls a year by 2027, according to HHS.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the mental health crisis in this country, and we must ensure that individuals who need help can get it,” said Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., D-6th Dist. “With a new, more simple number, individuals in crisis will be able to receive the support they need from qualified professionals through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.”
Residents having suicidal thoughts or emotional distress can call the NJ Hopeline at 1-855-654-6735 24 hours a day seven days a week.

New 988 number to help in suicide prevention and mental health988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
