The Liverpool icon is out in the middle-east but a close ally sees him making his way back to England.

His last Premier League attempt went awry - but Gary McAllister has watched enough at Rangers and Aston Villa to believe Steven Gerrard will be back.

The Liverpool legend is out in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ettifaq, where he's one of the many famous football faces to have jumped to the big-spending division. McAllister was his assistant at Rangers when the former midfielder delivered Scottish Premiership title 55, which earned him a shot at the Villa job. But he lasted less than a year and Unai Emery has since guided them into Europe.

Memories made in Glasgow remain special but a harsh hand dealt in Birmingham remains an overarching feeling, as Gerrard is told he's in a league way behind where he was before. But McAllister insists he has the minerals to bounce back and return to England's top table His former assistant told Sky: "He was close to a couple of clubs here, maybe a little bit disappointed. But the club in Saudi wanted him and he's gone, and he's started well. He's enjoying it.

"The levels and everything in and around football in Saudi is obviously miles behind the Premier League in England where everything is supreme. But he will be back here without a shadow of a doubt. He is meticulous in his preparation. The way he prepared himself for games at Liverpool is no different to the way he prepares teams to play at any level.

"We had a fantastic three and a bit years at Glasgow Rangers, another special football club. Managed to win the 55th title which has a nice ring to it. Stopped Celtic doing 10-in-a-row so that was special. Wee bit unlucky at Villa I felt. With the injuries, three major signings Steven made all got injured within a couple of weeks of each other and they were pretty serious injuries. Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos, Lucas Digne.
