San Diego State won the Mountain West tournament in 2002, setting the tone for what has become sustained success in college basketball
It’s been 20 years, but he still remembers the chills he felt as he was carried off the floor of what was then San Diego State’s Cox Arena, the conquering hero of the Aztecs’ first postseason victory in program history, a 67-62 overtime win over UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the 2003 NIT.
SDSU won four games in 1998-99 under Fred Trenkle, and even Fisher, the magic man from Michigan, won just five games in his first season. By Year 2, 2000-01, the Aztecs went 14-14. More importantly, Fisher had convinced a collection of California’s finest high schoolers and transfers to come to San Diego.
On Dec. 29, 2001, the Aztecs traveled to Duke and lost to the top-ranked Blue Devils, 92-79, Duke’s narrowest home margin of victory. Even the lone loss proved valuable, as an 83-76 defeat at UNLV gave the Aztecs some familiarity with the Rebels. What followed was a microcosm of the Aztecs’ fantastic finish, when SDSU’s collection of individual talent finally started to congeal into one.
UNLV was hungry for a win, coming off a one-year postseason ban that made it awkward when they hosted the 2001 conference tournament but couldn’t play in it.It’s not that San Diego State’s athletic department was pessimistic, but it is fair to say that expectations for the Aztecs were still low — even in the midst of their best season in more than a decade. Not anticipating a championship run, the school hadn’t reserved hotel rooms for Friday night, and there was a convention in town.
The Aztecs were matched against the Rebels, who’d beaten them twice in overtime during the regular season, but they had no doubts.
