Steve Coogan admits the controversial Jimmy Savile drama, The Reckoning, in which he portrays the sex offender, is ‘walking a tight rope,’ but insists the series will ‘vindicate itself.
The four-parter – written by Neil McKay – will tell the story of how Savile came from a working-class background to be one of the biggest stars in television and will also focus on his years of sexual abuse and the impact he had on his victims.
The 56-year-old actor and comedian is set to portray the sex offender and although he understood why people were disgusted by the show’s premise, he expressed that the script ‘is very well written.’‘It’s walking a tightrope. But I think it will vindicate itself when it comes out. I’ve seen a bit and I think it’s good.’
He continued: ‘It’s a mistake to think that the best way to deal with something is to not talk about it.’Jimmy Savile died in 2011 , aged, 84, and having never been brought to justice for his crimes of paedophilia, he’s now thought to be one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders. The makers of the programme were ‘working closely with many people whose lives were impacted by Savile to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect’, the BBC said in a casting announcement last year.The BBC has come under fire for dramatising his horrific crimes and has been accused of ‘hypocrisy’ considering Savile’s past with the broadcaster.’ towards his starring role and stated that the series could ‘prevent’ history repeating itself.
‘If you sweep it under the carpet and just don’t talk about it anymore, then those people are destined to come back,’ he said.
