'The time for action is now, and together, we can ensure Belfast’s city centre remains a thriving hub of activity and opportunity.'
As Belfast recovers from a week of unrest, it brings into focus the importance of ensuring the ongoing safety and security of the city centre. Crime and anti-social behaviour not only tarnish the city's image but also undermine its potential as a thriving hub for business, tourism, and community life.
Street drinking is another visible issue that detracts from the safety and appeal of our city centre. The current approach however, relying on cumbersome prosecutions through Council by-laws, is ineffective and slow. A more efficient solution is to empower authorities to seize alcohol from those violating public space protection orders, without resorting to prosecution.
We’re fully behind these efforts, as we believe that a vibrant and safe night-time economy is crucial for the city’s growth. By addressing key issues such as transportation and public awareness, we can create an environment where everyone feels secure and welcome after dark. Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in Belfast’s city centre demands a coordinated, multi-faceted approach. Linen Quarter BID is committed to working closely with the PSNI, local government, and the business community to implement effective solutions.
