Daebreon Poiema stars in the Theatre at the Welk production opening Saturday
Once you’ve played Miss Hopper the Green Teeny Bopper, stepping into Whitney Houston’s shoes should be a snap, right?
The Southern California native recalled being reluctant to even audition, but her determined mother gave her the push she needed.“The first time I heard the audience laughing, that’s when I knew,” Poiema said of the acting bug’s first bite. “I thought ‘OK, Mommy was right.’”Now to the present and Poiema’s second go-round as the singer-actress Rachel Marron in “The Bodyguard” musical, based on the 1992 film that starred Houston and Kevin Costner.
“To me, it’s the sound and quality of her voice,” she said. “It wasn’t a matter of being trained to sound a specific way; it was a matter of her natural ability and her love for it, too. I get to enjoy singing these beautiful songs that are a part of Whitney’s catalogue.”
