Gabriel Arias left Tuesday's game against Cincinnati after the third inning.
Arias was back in the lineup against the Reds after missing Sunday’s series finale with the Orioles. Francona said the shortstop had recovered from Saturday’s bruise, but he struck out twice in his first two at-bats, losing his grip on the bat on three different swings before exiting the contest. Tyler Freeman replaced Arias at shortstop in the fourth.
“He came through the workout today real good, swung in the cage and everything,” Francona said. “When he missed the pitch is when he felt it.” Francona said even if images of Arias’ wrist come back clean, it’s hard to imagine him playing in the next couple of days. Giménez fouled a splitter from Reds righty Freddy Cruz off his right leg, just below the knee with two out in the seventh. Following an extended delay while trainers and Francona tended him on the field, Giménez finished his at-bat with a swinging strike three. He was replaced by Jose Tena in the top of the eighth.
