Wallace Sargent from Winterton helped advance knowledge of black holes and how galaxies are formed.
A famous space scientist has been honoured by a statue outside his former school in North Lincolnshire.The son of a steelworker and a cleaner he was born in 1935 and grew up in the town of Winterton.
"The sculpture stands as a symbol of our shared history and collective ambition, showing the story of one of our own who began humbly and achieved incredible things," he said.Mr Sargent worked at the Royal Observatory in London before becoming a professor of astronomy in California Mr Sargent continued his education at Scunthorpe Technical College before studying astronomy at Manchester University in the 1950s.
