Sen. Dan McCay is urging lowering the ban on most Utah abortions from 18 weeks of gestation to six weeks after the Utah Supreme Court kept a trigger law on ice
State Sen. The Utah State Supreme Court on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024, issued a ruling keeping a preliminary injunction in place that pauses a ban on most abortions in the state as a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood makes its way through the courts.
"I've notified the governor, and I've notified legislative leadership today, that I'm going to be asking for a special session," said McCay at the Capitol. "It is extremely disappointing for us who have been advocating for an end to this brutal practice of abortion. The unborn, the innocent will lose their lives because of these actions."
McCay was joined by pro-life activists, who dressed in black, but noted the Supreme Court's ruling was on a "procedural" matter---and expressed confidence the near total abortion ban will eventually go into effect.
