State Department Monday deadline to turn over secret Afghan dissent cable as GOP readies subpoena
Rep. Michael McCaul, Texas Republican and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he’s prepared to file a subpoena by the end of the day Monday over the cables, which were sent in July 2021 just weeks before the U.S. began its frantic withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“And that’s why if they don’t deliver by Monday, close of business, I will serve that subpoena,” Mr. McCaul said. The subpoena from Mr. McCaul is likely to touch off a legal fight with the State Department over the cable. There are about 175 Americans still in Afghanistan and some of them are being held captive by the Taliban, Mr. Blinken told Congress last week.

Old photo shows Afghan soldier in Kabul, not 'Pakistani soldier hitting woman in Lahore'A photo that appears to show a soldier about to beat a woman with his rifle has been shared in multiple social media posts that falsely claim it was taken during clashes between police and supporters of Imran Khan outside the former Pakistani prime minister's residence in the Zaman Park suburb in Lahore in March 2023. The photo has in fact circulated online since at least October 2022. It shows a Taliban soldier and a protester during a demonstration by ethnic Hazara women in Afghanistan's capital Kabul.
