The board’s approval authorizes the necessary funding to proceed with planning activities for the projects.

During this planning phase, the specifics of the projects, like facility size and anticipated costs, will be determined. A timeline for completion of the projects was not set.

“The board’s approval of these projects, identified in the SDA’s Statewide Strategic Plan as priority projects, will significantly reduce district-wide overcrowding and facility deficiencies that impact thousands of students statewide,” SDA Chairman Robert Nixon said. “These projects will deliver thousands of new or replacement student seats in state-of-the-art facilities that will foster learning and student achievement.

For Jersey City and its 27,000-plus student body, the news comes a day after the state awarded the district an additional $89 million in coronavirus relief-related funding. That money is expected to be use to renovate and repair aging schools. The Jersey City school district, serving a population of 292,000, has 38 schools, one alternative program and four early childhood centers. West New York, with nearly 53,000 residents, has eight schools and an early childhood center.
