SpaceX kicks off new year with launch of multi-satellite 'rideshare' mission.
Updated on: January 3, 2023 / 1:18 PMPicking up where it left off in 2022, SpaceX launched its first Falcon 9 of the new year Tuesday, boosting 114 small satellites and other payloads to orbit in the company's sixth"rideshare" mission, designed to provide low-cost access to space for smaller payloads.
Spectacular shots from a"rocketcam" on the Falcon 9 first stage captured a bird's eye view of the booster's descent to landing at Cape Canaveral.The second stage, meanwhile, fired twice over a 53-minute period to reach the planned 325-mile-high orbit. Minutes later, the satellite deployments started, beginning with KuwaitSat-1.
The Transporter 6 payloads were launched one at a time from a dispenser atop the Falcon 9 second stage. This view, showing a payload departing to lower right, came near the end of the deployment sequence as the rocket was passing over northern Canada.
