South Alabama holds off Southeastern Louisiana 70-68 in first round of The Basketball Classic.

“I told the guys ‘I want you to enjoy this,’” South Alabama coach Richie Riley said. “This is really a tournament that’s designed for you to carry momentum to the next season and designed to get better. I wanted them to be able to get better every day in practice while enjoying it. … It was a really good win, and a great opportunity for our guys to get out there and improve in a tournament environment.
“There was definitely a lot of rust,” Franklin said. “We missed a lot of free throws. It took us a while to get our legs back under us and get back into our rhythm.” Behind guard Joe Kasperzyk and forward Jalyn Hinton — who combined for 30 points — Southeastern Louisiana tied the game at 66-66 with 1:45 to play. The Lions then turned the ball over on their next two possessions, with Franklin’s baby hook at the 44-second mark putting South Alabama on top for good.
“It certainly wasn’t pretty the last 10 minutes, but I’m really excited about winning the game,” Riley said. “We had a lot of guys who were able to contribute tonight, and that’s what a tournament like this is for. … I’m glad that we found a way to win at the end.”
