The former teacher, local historian and Scottish country dancing instructor grew up in Kirkbean
Like so many people in Galloway , Sophia Harkness would not be here but for the Great Famine in Ireland.
“He was an agricultural worker or a farmer, got the boat over to Scotland from Belfast, and his family came with him.“The family got jobs in dairies and worked on various farms in Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire, and my great-grandfather, John Harper, is buried at Tongland.“But we discovered he has no gravestone and the family means to put that right.
“Billy was at Slacks at Lochmaben from 1972 and from 1988 to 1999 Mr Kenneth Nairn, the owner, was pronounced dairy farmer of the year in a competition run by the Farmer’s Weekly in conjunction with Dalgety Feeds, for producing the best profit of any dairy in the United Kingdom. “The next three, Mary, myself and James, were born at Newmains, and the final three, Billy, Philip and Tilda, at Maxwellfield near Southerness.
“Our parents were too busy to be with us and if you stayed too long out there you’d be stranded by the tide. “Every day for weeks his mother would come and get water out of the burn and put fresh flowers on his grave.“I was dux of the school, passed my control exam, and was given the chance to go to Dumfries Academy, Wallace Hall, Kirkcudbright Academy or New Abbey.“I was so fond of helping in the dairy that my father and mother knew that I wanted to be down on the farm instead of doing my homework.“I only got home once a month and was so homesick to begin with.“It was either that or a milk tester.
“Our home was full of instruments like the accordion, chanter and Jewish harp but for some reason I thought the cello was a saxophone. “I wanted to help my mother but after only two or three months my father was off to Drumbreddan in the Rhins. This last revelation leads me to ask how Sophia Harper became Sophia Harkness – and it’s a story of romance conceived in a manner typical of the times.
“Then we called in to his mother and father’s in Penpont and 18 months later we were married, at Ardwell in the Rhins of Wigtownshire, because that’s where my parents were, at Drumbreddan Farm.”
