The teams of four are to be tested on their map reading and navigation skills, casualty extraction, communication, minefield crossing, survival skills, observation and memory
Last year more than 100 Valley residents took on the physically and mentally gruelling eight-mile trek. Hospice supporter and former soldier, John Dawson is already in the throes of planning this year’s Sabre Challenge, which includes ten team challenges en-route.
. Rawtenstall Cricket Club will be the host again for the final challenge, an obstacle course with six more problem solving tasks to truly test heavy legs and tired minds.John, who lost his dad David during the Covid pandemic to cancer was keen to organise his second fundraiser in gratitude to the Hospice at Home team who provided care and support as well as much needed respite for the whole family during the difficult time.
John said: “I am still amazed with how the day went last year and I was delighted to raise over £12,000. Despite a damp start with navigation difficult in low cloud, all teams took on the challenges in their stride and it was great to see them complete the final obstacles with a smile on their face, and it put a smile on my face to hear them say that they wanted to do it so here we are!”
Joanna Williams, Senior Fundraiser at the Hospice, said: “We are excited for this year’s Sabre Challenge to be bigger and better. We wouldn’t be able to run this event without John’s meticulous organising and of course without the generous financial help of our sponsors.” The Hospice would like to thank the returning sponsors Mission Labs, Limelight Signs and Wynsors Shoes, along with new sponsors Suprafilt and Exersci. Each sponsor will be entering their very own team and competing for first place! For more details on the challenge visit www.rossendalehospice.org
