Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Son of a Critch, like Schitt’s Creek before it, is a hilarious and emotional Canadian sitcom that has made its way to American television. The series brings to life the 2018 memoir of the same title by Canadian comedy icon Mark Critch, who used the book to explore his childhood in Newfoundland. Critch even plays his own father in Son of a Critch; the young version of himself is played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth.
But Mark wrote this memoir, Son of a Critch, that was published [and] became a best seller, and he connected with a friend of his: a guy by the name of Tim McAuliffe. Tim is a Canadian screenwriter based out of LA who's written shows like The Office and MacGruber and The Last Man on Earth. They actually met on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and they started talking about, like, “Is there a series here? Let’s test it out.
But what you learn--and this is definitely built into the DNA of the show—is, families are families, and adolescence is adolescence, and awkwardness is awkwardness, and this sort of thing. We thought that’s what was being built when the writing was happening, or when the filming was happening, but you don't really know that until you release it to the world, and instantly in Canada that's the feedback we got.
I think, also, this show is about family and that show is about family, and it’s about how families navigate things together. On the surface, they're both very simple shows in that sense, where you're kind of peeling back a lot of the complications of life and really finding out what's important to people, and what people connect with. Those were lessons that I think were learned from Schitt’s Creek and from other shows like that that work.
I think that's been one of the reasons for the success of the show, too, because we haven't, verged away from the authenticity of Mark's life, and the story. There are obviously some liberties that are taken, but at the same time this is a show about him, his family, and growing up, and his parents are no longer with us, [and] his grandparents are no longer with us. There’s some honoring that goes along with that, and there is a sense of legacy and the importance of that as well.
