Paul Gilbert said he went to check on his mother Maureen Gilbert, 83, after failing to hear from her or from fire and rescue services, following flooding that ravaged the central England town of Chesterfield.

Disabled and housebound Maureen Gilbert, 84, died in flood waters which poured into her property in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Mrs Gilbert lived on the ground floor as she struggled to get up the stairs.
’ In a fundraising appeal to raise money for repairing the damaged house, Mr Gilbert’s wife Kaye explained how ‘chest-high’ flood defences put up by her husband were overcome, causing water to pour in ‘at rapid speed’. She said the house was not insured because the family had been quoted £100,000 excess costs for cleaning and repairing the home after it was damaged in the 2007 floods.
