Hocus Pocus' Thackery Binx, not Salem from the Sabrina series, takes the top place in our hearts as the best talking cat, period.
The Big Picture Across the film and television landscape, there is no shortage of notable talking felines, from the endlessly endearing Puss in Boots of the Shrek/Puss in Boots franchise to the momentarily popular version of Garfield from the Garfield films. However, when narrowing the scope down to the most famous of black cats, especially in the interest of Spooky Season, chances are for a number of people, the Sabrina franchise’s Salem will first come to mind.
After the film shifts to the present, Binx, in cat form, makes his first appearance when Max, his sister, Dani , and his crush, Allison , all enter the Sanderson sisters’ cottage. In his first contemporary scene, Thackery demonstrates his bravery three times. First, Binx tries to prevent Max from lighting the black flame candle. Second, Binx saves the kids from the witches’ attack by lunging at Winifred.
Thackery Binx Is the Heart of the Film Not only is Binx the film’s narrative center, but he is also the heart of the film. The film’s prologue establishes Binx as the film’s most tragic character. Not only does he lose the fight to save his sister, but he also loses his parents. As a cat, he meows and rubs against his father’s legs, desperately trying to communicate with his dad. Instead, his father shoos him away.
