‘Terrifying’ is how Mr. Roadshow’s daughter described her maiden voyage on the road to Santa Cruz.
Q: When my son was taking driver’s training, the instructor had him driving Highway 17 the first day. I was appalled. Is this normal? What was he thinking?A: Some driving instructors do this to show new drivers how to cope with dangerous driving conditions. The fast driving on 17, many road curves, and other risks can make a lasting impression. When Anne – the Roadshow daughter – took driver’s training, her instructor had her drive 17 from San Jose to Scotts Valley on her second day.
There are a number of spots on Highway 17 that would benefit from overpasses or underpasses. Those fixes can’t come soon enough.A: Here’s advice from the highway patrol. Don’t focus just the car immediately ahead of you. Keep an eye, also, on what’s happening to traffic farther ahead. Q: I have driven over 17 regularly for the past 40 years. I have driven it in sunshine and pouring rain, some days with winds so strong the rain was nearly horizontal.
In my opinion, Highway 17 is perfectly engineered for all driving conditions, if you drive the posted speed limit of 50 mph and follow the slower warnings on the curves. Spend the money on the crossing for critters who cannot avoid the drivers.
