Cheaper installation costs and energy security concerns are driving expansion
Solar powerFuture frontrunner: in four years’ time solar will pass coal to boast the largest share of generation capacity, says the International Energy Agency © Bing Guan/Bloomberg
Now, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushes energy security concerns centre stage, the development of solar is set to pick up speed — with record breaking numbers of installations forecast in each of the next five years. Costs picked up last year as the price of component parts, most notably polysilicon, soared. But utility-scale solar was still the cheapest option for new electricity generation in most parts of the world. The rate of installations grew by more than half last year, says the consultancy S&P Global Commodity Insights.
Solar, with its low costs and ability to be built at any scale — from a single panel on a rooftop to a sprawling multi-gigawatt array — will account for the bulk of the EU power additions in the coming years, according to S&P.
