Saskatoon\u0027s Jesse Tyndall is a finalist for the Nissen Emery Award, which is the Heisman Trophy of American collegiate gynastics.
The Saskatoon native, into his final season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, has three meets left, including the Big 10 and NCAA championships. Then he’ll decide what comes next, and whether he’s finished with singlets and apparatus.
Tyndall is the third of three brothers to compete in the Big 10 — all at different schools. Wyatt went to Penn State, and Mitch to Nebraska. During Jesse’s freshman season, all three siblings competed at the Big 10 and NCAA championships. “It was really different for — he was the first one, and everything was a new experience,” says Jesse, who competed locally with the Taiso Gymnastics Club. “Then Mitch went, and when it was my turn to go, I had all the advice I needed — all the ins and outs of the recruiting process, what to do and what not to do. It was a big benefit for me.”
“I didn’t have anywhere to train,” he says. “I was basically doing home workouts; going for runs, doing everything I could to stay in shape without being in an actual gymnastics facility.”
