IN the wake of the Rutherglen by-election, I have listened to and watched the numerous reactions and comments of the “pundits “and “experts” ably supported by the press and television media both north and south of the Border forecasting the demise of theparty conference and you would think that the General Election many months from now was already in the bag. Harold Wilson’s statement “a week is a long time in politics” should not be ignored.
The SNP has achieved much in the cost-of-living areas identified but what Rutherglen has exposed is that our support and the voters know little about what the party has achieved. We must shout from the rooftops each day and every day what we have done and what we are doing. Finally, what has really changed is that over the last 13 years the opposition has been the Conservatives, and Labour remained in the political wilderness. In Scotland, left-leaning voters shifted to the SNP. As long as Labour could not win atthen the SNP attracted the left’s vote and at the same time many embraced independence.
It really is a “no-brainer”. The SNP have as a matter of urgency to ensure that the independence message IS front and centre, with the clear message that ONLY independence can deliver to the Scottish people the improved living standards they crave. The party’s survival depends on it!We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories.
