In an interview with the Record, the new convener of Holyrood's social justice committee talked of the anguish of growing up poor in an affluent part of Scotland.

Holyrood’s new social justice chief has opened up about the grinding poverty she faced after the early death of her dad from alcohol abuse.

In an interview with the Record, she spoke of growing with little money in prosperous Bridge of Weir. She said: “It was hard being a young person to see other people that have so much around you, and are going on holidays and different activities and doing all these great things, and you’re not. Don, a mum of two, said: “I always said that I wanted a better life for my children. I left home really young and me and my partner, we both kind of had this agreement that we didn’t want to start a family until we had security and could make sure that they were going to have a better life than we did.“Becoming the convener of this committee has been really important for me because I think I can draw on that past experience.
