The First Minister was in tears as he made the announcement yesterday afternoon.
The First Minister’s decision opened the door for party stalwart John Swinney to launch a bid for Bute House.
He sacked the Greens from government last week but faced defeat in a no-confidence motion – forcing him to quit in a dramatic Bute House announcement. “For a minority government to be able to govern effectively trust when working with the opposition is clearly fundamental.“Politics can be a brutal business. It takes its toll on your physical and mental health, your family suffer alongside you.”
Confirming he could stand, Swinney said: “I’ve been somewhat overwhelmed by the requests that have been made for me to do that.”Flynn said Swinney is the “only person with the experience to do the job and unite the party”, while predecessor Ian Blackford said he “has what it takes”. He also said some SNP MSPs would not vote for her and claimed she would only get the job if the Tories abstained in the vote.
