An SNP MP has urged South Africa’s President to help speed up the extradition of an alleged sex offender dubbed “Scotland’s Savile”.Owen Thompson MP has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa for help to bring former teacher Iain Wares to face justice in Scotland. The retired teacher faces charges over more than 80 offences against more than 40 victims in Scotland.Midlothian MP Thompson also met with Scotland’s Lord Advocate to discuss the case.
“Time is of the essence here. Mr Wares is well into his 80s so it is imperative he is brought to Scotland so that he can face justice as soon as possible. Wares, 84, faced eight complaints about child sex abuse in his native South Africa before he came to Scotland. In the BBC Panorama programme 'My Teacher the Abuser: Fighting for Justice', Wares’ victims spoke of his abuse at Edinburgh Academy and at neighbouring Fettes between 1968 and 1979. He has lived in South Africa since 1979 and has been accused of indecent abuse by a former pupil at Rondebosch Boys Prep School in the suburb of Cape Town. Wares reportedly sought residential psychiatric treatment for his paedophilia at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital before starting at Edinburgh Academy.
