The Big 12 wasn’t a viable option for the SMU Mustangs, whose best shot at making a Power Five conference was always with a league that didn’t have a toe in...

, the Big 12 won’t have nearly as much star power as the ACC. The increased level of competition won’t help SMU’s College Football Playoff hopes any, if at all, which is beside the point these days.Joining a league with a reasonable expectation of one day winning it seems passe. Back when I argued that A&M couldn’t be expected to win the SEC if it couldn’t make a run at the Big 12, I got all kinds of blowback from Aggies. They’d made it to the SEC, the best league in the land.

Maybe the prospects of the Fighting Irish in the house one day will even coax ‘em in from the Boulevard. For sure, it’ll be a blast, and SMU should enjoy it while it lasts. Because Florida State and Clemson and North Carolina have made noise about wanting better splits. If they don’t get them, and they can figure how to break grant-of-rights agreements that run through 2036, they just might.

No one should expect this latest wave of realignment to be the last. My guess is that the final iteration of college football will be Georgia and Alabama playing each other every week, with the Ohio State band dotting the “i” at halftime.Long before it comes to that, SMU could find itself back in the same place it was in the ‘90s, when the SWC broke up. But today, anyway, is a day to celebrate. SMU is back in the big time.
