A Newport News, Virginia, teacher is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot by a 6-year-old student, according to Norfolk-based ABC affiliate 13News Now.
In a Friday evening press conference, the Newport News police chief said the shooting was not accidental and that the teacher's injuries were life-threatening, the station reported.VIRGINIANS GROOVING ON GLENN YOUNGKIN, APPROVAL STAYS ABOVE 50%
The school was put on lockdown around 2 p.m. while police responded to reports of the shooting, the station reported. A spokesperson for Newport News Public Schools said there was"no longer an active shooter" just before 3 p.m. According to 13News Now, the lockdown ended around 3:20 p.m., and police were helping to reunite students with their families.The identities of the injured teacher and suspect have not been released.
