Galen Rupp and Sara Hall are headlining the U.S. men’s and women’s fields.
After a tight turnaround from Tokyo to Chicago—with a buildup that he said went surprisingly well—Rupp is ready to try for another victory. In a field that now includes 2:03:55 marathoner Reuben Kipyego, Rupp knows he has competition.
Kipyego, 25, has the fastest time among the competitors in the men’s race. In May, he ran 2:03:55 to win the Generali Milano Marathon, two years after making his debut in the distance by winning the Dubai Marathon in 2019. When asked if the heat would be a factor for him, Kipyego said, “no problem.”This weekend, Tatyana McFadden, Daniel Romanchuk, and Marcel Hug are taking on the ambitious goal of racing the Chicago and Boston Marathons back-to-back.
“I can say mostly I’m hoping for the best results because I think it is so hot. ... It depends,” she said. “For now, I cannot say I will run faster or I can run with time. So, it depends on that day if the weather will favor me.”After a breakthrough 2:09:45 at the Marathon Project this December—nearly a seven-minute personal best, at age 29—Ian Butler will take on his first world major marathon in Chicago Sunday.
