There are major doubts as to whether the Glazers truly wanted to sell Man Utd
With each day, week and month that passes by, optimism about a potential Manchester United takeover wears thin. Almost one year has passed since the Glazers announced they would “explore strategic alternatives” to their club ownership. But what exactly did this mean?
The announcement did attract interest for United from both UK shores and abroad. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim emerging as the two front-runners to end the Glazer era. The Qatari prince submitted a final, take-it-or-leave-it, £5billion offer in June which the Glazers refused to entertain. For context, the £3.8billion sale of NFL behemoth Denver Broncos to Walmart heir Rob Walton last year is the current highest fee paid for a sports club. Final negotiations earlier this week were fruitless and the Qatari offer was withdrawn.
In all takeover cases, the selling party either shows a willingness to sell - or is forced to do so. Chelsea were the prime example of the latter when the UK Government seized Roman Abramovich’s assets following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
