It was 19 February 2024 when Newcastle United officially confirmed that Ashworth had been put on gardening leave as he had made clear his intention to move to Manchester United.
Newcastle United hold all the aces here and whilst Sir Jim Ratcliffe clearly thinks that he and Man U can dictate to everybody else what has to happen, that is not proving the reality with NUFC. As others have pointed out, Ratcliffe could simply use a very small proportion of the personal taxes he chooses not to pay in the UK, with the reported £20m needing to secure Ashworth just relative chicken feed.
Whether these ‘face to face’ talks were anything significant, remains to be seen. As it could simply have been the fact that both Staveley and Ratcliffe came into contact as this week saw the latest meeting of the 20 Premier League clubs.
