Singapore well-placed to help Timor-Leste reach its potential, Dr Balakrishnan says

Timor-Leste is a country with great potential and Singapore is well-placed to help it achieve its development goals, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan said on Wednesday.

“They look to Singapore with fondness, with trust, and they hope especially that we will help them with capacity development,” he added. But the fruits of that labour may not appear overnight, as some Singaporean businesses based in Timor-Leste would attest to. “Their plan is to capitalise on natural resources and use it to help transform opportunities for the next generation,” Dr Balakrishnan said, adding that he is optimistic they will achieve economic lift-off at some point.

“To see our Singaporeans participating in this partnership with the local authorities - it will make a difference.”
