, the Prime Minister of New Zealand. Brazenly, I approached her and fawned. It was probably a little embarrassing to watch, but I’ve never really cared what strangers thought of me. I merely wanted to tell her how I much I admired her – particularly how well I felt she defined and viewed leadership. Her presence was never authoritative but her authority was unquestionable.
It’s been about two weeks since my jaunt to New Zealand and our conversation hasn’t left me. There are two mantras that I live by, or at least try to remember: “People will never forget how you make them feel”, and that “People invest in people”. As a little person, I have hoped that sharing my experiences of being a disabled woman will transform perception and give visibility to a narrative that has often been dismissed. But my advocacy is a choice. I choose to let you in. It should not be my responsibility – but without an understanding of the diversity of human experience and a consciousness of what it is like to live in different bodies, our inaccessible and often inequitable world will remain.
I want to give others the space and the choice to tell their story. I want to learn about who they are, via four questions: How do you describe yourself personally and professionally? What is the monologue that is in your mind? What is it like to live in your body? And what gives you hope?
