Simon Thomas recalls being 'on precipice of ending it all' as he marks one year sober
Simon Thomas has shared the story behind how he came to the decision to quit alcohol in a candid post.
He then spoke about how he believed for many years that he had treshe same kind of relationship with alcohol as many other men in their 20s and 30s, adding "when I was on it – I was on it!" Simon then shared how his life turned upside down following the sudden and tragic death of his wife Gemma, who he had son Ethan with. In November 2017, Gemma died just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.
Simon attempted to hide his drinking, but "as intoxication took hold, deception became impossible" and it became a constant "battle not to drink" for months. Simon said nearly all of his biggest mistakes and regrets can all be traced back to drinking alcohol. He continued: "On more than one occasion it had taken me to the precipice of ending it all; & yet, despite having a beautiful wife, an amazing son & family & friends who loved me I felt trapped. I had tried giving up before but it had always ended in failure. Why? Because in truth I was doing it for others, the worried friends & family; but not really for myself.
He continued: "Alcohol & me were done. For good. A year on I can honestly say it's the best decision I have ever made. Instead of being burdensome, it had been wonderfully liberating."
