One constituency received money from the firm while its MP vowed to fight against one its masts being built
A Blackburn-based telecoms firm thrust into the national spotlight as one of the UK's largest political donations has remained silent over its support to Conservative MPs.
IX Wireless operates in tandem with its sister company 6G Internet Limited to provide ‘next generation gigabyte capable broadband’. Its website boasts that it is ‘managing the 6G Internet' in Northern towns, 'providing gigabit internet at lower prices than providers such as Virgin and BT’. Other IX Wireless donations listed on the Westminster Accounts database include £8,500 to Workington MP Mark Jenkinson, £5,000 to Carlisle MP John Stevenson, £8,500 to Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell and £4,750 to Copeland MP Trudy Harrison. None of the Northern MPs mentioned on the website responded when approached by The Northern Agenda politics newsletter about the donations.
He said: "As a member of the Northern Research Group, a group of Conservative MPs representing Northern constituencies, including here in Bolton West, we work together to make sure that we can campaign and talk to Ministers and talk to business and talk to councils, people right across the North of England and make sure we have an influence in Westminster that represents the number of MPs in our group.
In December 2021 it was reported that Stockton South Tory MP Matt Vickers had received £2,500 from IX Wireless. A spokesman for the Teesside MP said he doesn’t personally benefit from these donations but the money does go towards paying for leaflets and other materials so that he can keep in touch with residents all year round.
Around the same time, the firm was ordered to take down a ‘monstrous’ 60ft mast it put up without permission in the middle of a housing estate in Cheadle, Greater Manchester. Residents hit out after the huge metal structure – dubbed ‘The Rocket’ – appeared, branding it a ‘monstrosity’ and raising concerns about its proximity to their homes.
