When Montgomery officials held a dedication earlier this month to honor former Assistant Fire Chief James Touvell, who died last year, it was the first time in the history of the village a street sign was erected to commemorate the legacy of a community member.

Jimmie Touvell Way, at Clay and Railroad streets in front of the fire station, is not only a fitting tribute to this man who gave an incredible 55 years to the Montgomery and Countryside Fire Protection District, it was also a very personal labor of love from the wife who still grieves his passing.“He loved Montgomery so much,” she said of her late husband, who was born and raised in the village he protected from 1965 to 2020.

One way to deal with her grief: Find a special way to honor the man his colleagues lovingly referred to as Jimmie T. Working closely with village staff and Fire Chief Tom Meyers, who Louise said her late husband mentored through his rise in the department, a policy was created that would make it possible to erect honorary street signs in memory of those who loved the village and made a significant impact in it.
