Yan Li, a Yale-trained scientist, was shot and killed outside her condo after a deputy tried to serve her an eviction notice in March 2022.
Three county sheriff’s deputies and a San Diego police officer were legally justified last year when they fatally shot a woman who stabbed an officer during a standoff in Little Italy, the District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.
The district attorney also found that Li had the “ability, opportunity and intent” to stab the deputies and police — and had already stabbed one of them.Three deputies, one San Diego police officer shot and killed Yan Li after she stabbed an officer in the chest at a condo complex on West Beech Street
The law enforcement personnel who opened fire were sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Nickel, deputies Javier Medina and David Williams and police Officer Rogelio Medina. The officer who was stabbed was not identified publicly., San Diego police said Nickel had worked for the Sheriff’s Department for 29 years, Javier Medina for 23 years and Williams for 14 years. All were assigned to the field division of the department’s court services bureau.
The letter states that he did not feel a crime had been committed against him. “Had that been the only thing that happened he would have been comfortable walking away,” the letter reads.
