Kean University began awarding scholarships in memory of Damarys Vazquez in 2008.
A Kean University scholarship fund for aspiring educators, inspired by the death of a young teacher in 2002, is getting a major boost via the estate of the late teachers’ parents.recently received an $850,000 posthumous donation, a gift that will increase the number of scholarships awarded annually and the financial package offered to students, a spokesperson at the university said.
To be eligible, a student must be an incoming female freshman majoring in early childhood education and living in Elizabeth, the city where Damarys Vasquez resided with her parents, Damaryz and Alcibiades “Johnny” Vazquez.Damarys Vazquez was an early childhood education major and graduated in 1998 from Kean University. She was a fourth grade teacher in Elizabeth prior to her death, in 2002, from complications of lupus, the university said.
