Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey teases Shauna's secrets and hints at the darkness that persists in her character as an adult: 'I’m excited for all that stuff to come out.'
Melanie Lynskey, one of the stars of Yellowjackets, teases a dark secret that haunts her character Shauna. Yellowjackets is a Showtime drama series about a high school girl's soccer team stranded in the Canadian wilderness after a tragic plane crash. The team is reunited in 2021 after receiving threatening postcards suggesting that someone knows too much about their 19 months in the woods.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Lynskey plays adult Shauna, one of the surviving members of the soccer team who lives an unassuming suburban life with her husband and teenage daughter. As an adult, Shauna is reunited with fellow team members Taissa , Natalie , and Misty to team up and uncover who is threatening to expose their secrets. Each character has found a way to cope with the shared trauma in the years that have passed since their rescue.
"All the teenage girls on the show were written in a way that really excited me. They weren’t archetypes or what you expect to see. They were messy, complicated individuals. People fuck up; people make mistakes and do horrible things, especially when you’re a teenager. When the show was pitched to me, they talked about a lot of different things that happened to Shauna in the wilderness.
Lynskey also expresses her excitement for how well-rounded all the teenage girl characters are. Yellowjackets avoids tired tropes and archetypes of the typical teenage girl in order to create complex and flawed individuals who regularly make mistakes. The series does not shy away from showing the grim consequences of the girl's actions as they fight for survival.
Yellowjackets season 1 was a surprise hit for Showtime, coming in as the most watched first season on the network in several years as well as the second most streamed series behind Dexter: New Blood. Lynskey's tease in addition to the show's success, lets fans know that they can expect multiple seasons down the line.
