The late writer's Tudor murder mystery makes for brilliant novels, but feels like a Disney theme park on screentaking the humble murder mystery as its starting point. This adaptation of CJ Sansom’s hugely popular Tudor novel series arrives with much anticipation and with much poignancy; Sansom died earlier this week at the age of 71.and pursuing the dissolution of the monasteries. At one such monastery, an emissary of Thomas Cromwell has been brutally beheaded.
The idea of a classic murder mystery with an epic Tudor setting and a big budget is an exciting one. But the source material and charismatic leads deserve better execution.
