Shamir Bailey may have only been in the business since 2014, but in popstar years, it feels like a lifetime. Emerging fully-formed from the suburbs of Las Vegas as a teen queer pop wunderkind with 2014’sEP, Bailey was swiftly picked up by the London-based tastemaking label XL. “I got kind of pulled into the electropop world, and then everything happened so fast, I didn't really have time to process it,” he recalls from his home in Philadelphia.
After nearly a decade of making music , Bailey has finally found his sweet spot with the release of his new single and self-directed video, “On My Own.” It’s a heady sonic mix of the female-fronted grunge bands he grew up worshipping—and has paid tribute to on the string of self-released, lo-fi albums he’s recorded over the past few years—while also being informed by the ear for melodic pop he honed during his time working on.
“I switch up my style all the time,” Bailey explains. “I think I’m very susceptible to my surroundings and the seasons also—I’m definitely a summer goth, for example. I love to wear colors and pastels in the winter, and then go full goth in the summer. I also love to wear things that look like I literally stole it from someone’s grandma.” For Bailey, the most consistent style element lies in his hair.
