Thomas Mills, 47, was one of seven men locked up after forming 'angry and violent mob' outside the Suites Hotel
Thomas Mills, 47, Brian McPadden, 61, Paul Lafferty, 42, and Jonjo O’Donoghue, 21, were found guilty of violent disorder in January after the demonstration outside the Suites Hotel in Knowsley on February 10 last year. The four defendants had all admitted being present at the demonstration but denied being part of the violence which resulted in three police officers being injured and a police van being set alight.
McPadden and O’Donoghue were sentenced to three years and six months in prison, and Mills and Lafferty were sentenced to two years and eight months.
Senior Crown Prosecutor David Jones of CPS Mersey-Cheshire said: “This was not a peaceful protest as these men claimed. It descended into violence and hostility – most of it directed at the police, who had to use all their protective gear to protect themselves and prevent violence spilling over into the hotel. This has been a complex prosecution, which evolved as more people were identified from CCTV at the scene.
