Seth Meyers is learning how to assemble a late-night show from his attic, with a little help from Martha Stewart, his wife Alexi, and some friendly YouTube critics
. “Obviously we’re dealing with a different degree of dire right now,” Meyers pointed out, “but I want to make sure that we don’t forget how dire things were before this. It’s on [our show] to process what’s happening in the news, which is often upsetting. The way we process, the way that is cathartic to us—and hopefully to an audience—is to add jokes to it. Sadly, I think we’re pretty well versed in the art of throwing a comedy sheen over current events.
Then Meyers self-directs his own segments. Or, as he put it on the phone, “I sit down, hit record, and try to get through a 15- or 20-minute Closer Look without fucking up too egregiously.” “A few YouTube commenters were constructive in their criticism of ways that professional TV people could make their videos look better. Someone said, ‘Hey, you have to buy a lav microphone. You sound terrible.’ So I bought a lav microphone, and it made a huge difference,” Meyers said at the end of the phone call, asking to share his thanks. “I just want to give them my appreciation. It’s like when the internet is good.
