Separation was painful for UMC, but our Christian identity is now stronger | Opinion
As United Methodists, we believe that Scripture is the primary source and standard for Christian doctrine, and these doctrines define our identity and guide our actions as a community called to pay attention to the world around us.
Some try to separate the church by framing “saving souls” and “seeking God’s justice for the world” as a dichotomy. Jesus’s teachings, however, place equal importance on reconciling people to God and alleviating the suffering and injustices in society. The United Methodist Church embraces the totality of Jesus’ teachings and ministry. We are committed to loving God, pursuing personal holiness and loving our neighbors through acts of service, mercy and justice ministries.
