Rishi Sunak risks “overpromising and underdelivering” with his hardline plan to crack down on Channel crossings, senior Conservatives have warned
.announce laws to bar all asylum claims from people who travel to the UK in small boats.
Meanwhile, a second former Cabinet minister said that alongside the hardline legislation, the Prime Minister must also set up new safe and legal routes in recognition of the fact that nearly two-thirds of small boat migrants, who have had decisions on their asylum claims since 2018, were granted refugee status.
“The number crossing the Channel is a problem that can and should be reduced, but it will not be eliminated. As well as concerns from Tory moderates, Mr Sunak is also facing the threat of a rebellion from right-wingers who want the UK to pull out of aspects of the European Convention on Human Rights to make it easier to deport people.
The meeting will come after Mr Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman on Tuesday announce laws to make asylum claims from those who travel to the UK in small boats inadmissible, with all of them to be deported to a safe country and banned from returning. “So, unless we have a safe third country that isn’t Rwanda to send people to, this just doesn’t seem to be possible.”
