Joshua Gunter, cleveland.comCLEVELAND, Ohio – The city of Cleveland intends to use some of its final money from the American Rescue Plan Act on affordable housing for seniors, social service agencies that help victims of crime and feed the hungry, and a development project in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood.
The social service agencies, slated to receive $500,000 each, are the May Dugan Center and the Brenda Glass Multipurpose Trauma Center. The Brenda Glass center, on Miles Avenue, is also looking to upgrade its facilities, which include safe housing for victims of violence. The center offers shelter, psychotherapy, case management, job placement and relocation assistance for victims of crime. Glass told council on Monday that the center already works with hospitals and the prosecutor’s office to help keep crime victims safe.
And $1 million will go towards construction of the Karam Senior Living project, which is being developed by the Northwest Neighborhoods Community Development Corp. The project, at the corner of Detroit Avenue and West 80th Street, will include 51 affordable apartments for seniors age 55 and older. All units will be limited to those who make 60% or less of area median income, and eight units will be set aside for those making $16,000 or less per year.
